I have a crack in my windshield in NJ is it safe to drive?

It is not recommended that you ever drive your vehicle if there is a crack that is in your view while driving. Even if the damage is repairable (minor rock chip), if the damage is in the driver’s direct line of view, insurance companies require replacement.  If the crack is on the passenger’s side of the windshield, we strongly recommend replacing the windshield as soon as possible due to the safety concerns including a proper deploy of the airbags and roof retention. If the crack is on the driver’s side of the windshield, you will need to determine whether or not the crack effects your driving negatively in any way (blind spots, catches your eye, annoying, etc). If it does, then I would recommend replacing it.

When faced with replacing a windshield, many car owners default to the lowest-price option.  But if you take this route and are in a serious accident, your decision could cost you your life.  An incorrectly installed windshield could pop out in an accident, allowing the roof to cave in and crush the car’s occupants.  Furthermore, when the front airbags deploy, they exert a tremendous force on the windshield and will blow out one that is not firmly glued into place.

You want to make sure when choosing your auto glass shop that they use OE (Original Equipment) quality products, are fully trained, certified, and insured, and use a quick, fast curing urethane for best results.  Many auto glass companies skimp on the products to keep costs down, however they are also putting your life in serious jeopardy if you are ever involved in a serious collision.  Make sure to ask the right questions to ensure you are getting a quality windshield installation for not only your own safety, but anyone else who may be driving in the vehicle as well.

Auto Glass week is here!

Later this week, we send our senior technician Todd Wendolowski to Louisville, Kentucky to compete in the 7th annual Pilkington Clear Advantage Auto Glass Technician Olympics!  Todd has over 25 years experience in the auto glass industry and has been rigorously training for this event in compliance with the AGRSS standard.  Contestants are judged on ten different sections: professionalism and credentials, technician comportment and vehicle inspection, proper product usage, proper equipment and tools usage, windshield removal, installation technique, post-installation and clean-up procedures, customer wrap-up, in-depth knowledge credit and correction of inappropriate conditions when necessary.  The focus is on quality, and while there is a time given for each heat and final round, the points are based on the quality of the work.  We look forward to testing Todd’s knowledge and skills against the best installers across the country, and hope he can make us proud and bring back the gold medal!
